Synopsis
Rafael Evans was born a twin to the Shore family of Hesús — a great house that has produced queens for generations. But twins are an ill omen, and when the family had to choose, they chose the daughter. Abandoned, Rafael was raised by the Black Water guild and honed into a killing machine.
His twin sister Marie grew up to become queen, wife of King Ivory Ignacio XXIII. Once, she came to Rafael begging for his help — and he turned her away. Years later, Marie died by her own hand, the most abhorrent sin in the kingdom, and her body was denied a proper burial. Rafael recovered her body and returned home for the first time in his life.
The enraged king ordered the Shore family to present another queen — but no marriageable maiden remained. Rafael, doubting his sister’s death was truly a suicide, volunteered: he would cross-dress and enter the palace himself, as the family’s cousin, “Annemarie La Shore.”
King Ivory is dazzlingly beautiful — and a born homosexual who has never been able to embrace a woman. Rafael does not recognize the feeling that strikes him at first sight. And the king, believing Rafael to be a woman, grows furious at his own attraction.
